“…The extremely low incidence of neurological accidents postanaesthesia would sustain the hypothesis of a marginal role only of these common factors in the genesis of the observed damage. Many reports and retrospective investigations in man show that neurological sequelae of general anaesthesia are often associated with pre-existing brain pathology (Schreiner 1983;Larsen et al 1988;Pedersen et al 1988;Weinger et al 1988;Christys et al 1989;Frei 1992) and that the outcome of cerebral ischaemia occurring for different reasons during anaesthesia is related to the chosen anaesthetic drugs (Miura 1998). A c c o r d i n g l y, the p o s t m o rt e m finding of ventricular cholesteatomas, Alzheimer type 2 astrocytes and of unusual cerebellar involvement, need to be taken into account in the interpretation of our case.…”
