Return to Acute Care Following Ambulatory Surgery

Abstract: Two-thirds of operations are performed on an outpatient basis, yet little research has assessed their quality. [1][2][3][4] Our population-based study found that 30-day revisits for clinically significant surgical site infections following ambulatory operations accounted for less than 15% of all-cause revisits to inpatient or ambulatory surgery settings. 5 The reasons for other revisits and their relationship to the index operation are unknown. This study determined the rates of all-cause, unplanned revisits (… Show more

“…Although this procedure was chosen for its simplicity and low rates of associated morbidity and mortality, 5 our choice could affect the generalizability of the results. Second, defining an adverse event as readmission to the hospital can be debated: in some cases, the reason for readmission may be unavoidable (eg, urinary retention requiring an emergency department visit).…”

“…Readmissions after inpatient surgery generally have been associated with postdischarge complications related to the procedure as opposed to exacerbations of complications during a previous hospitalization. 5 For patients undergoing surgery in the ambulatory surgical setting, acute care revisits are not uncommon and represent a potential quality improvement target. 5 …”

“…Today, 60–70% of all surgical procedures are performed as outpatient surgery, and this number is likely to increase in future in an ongoing effort to optimise the use of healthcare resources . Outpatient surgery has many advantages over traditional inpatient surgery, including increased convenience for the patient and reduced stress of recovering at home .…”

“…In Canada and the United States (US), the rate of return to ED or hospital admission between 24 h and 14 days after ambulatory surgery ranges from 3.1 to 6.5% (Fox et al, 2014 ; McIsaac et al, 2015 ; Menedez & Ring, 2016 ). The rate of return to hospital within 30 days after surgery ranges from 3 to 10.5% and varies by surgical procedure (Bhattacharyya, 2014 ; Perron-Burdick et al, 2011 ; Steiner et al, 2015 ). Unrelieved pain and bleeding are the most common reasons for return to hospital (Fox et al, 2014 ; Menedez & Ring, 2016 ; Perron-Burdick et al, 2011 ; Steiner et al, 2015 ).…”
