Return-to-Play and Performance Outcomes of Professional Athletes in North America After Hip Arthroscopy From 1999 to 2016

Abstract: This study supports the hypothesis that hip arthroscopy in professional athletes is associated with excellent rates of return at the professional level. However, postoperative performance outcomes varied based on sport and position.

“…Similar studies using publicly available sources for data collection have yielded different results, indicating that these data sets may not be ideal sources from which to draw worthy conclusions. 2 As stated in the limitations of their study, the data used by Christian et al 1 do not give information regarding diagnosis, concomitant pathology, surgical procedure, postoperative rehabilitation, or prior interventions. However, this information is vital to understanding which patients will benefit from surgical intervention and is needed to effectively counsel patients on postoperative recovery and return to sport.…”

“…In concordance with previous literature, this study supports a high rate of return (88.7%) for professional athletes after hip arthroscopy. [1][2][3] We would like to commend the authors for taking this topic 1 step further by looking at performance-based outcomes because return to sport and "meaningful" return to sport are 2 different concepts for the athlete.…”

“…A number of studies have focused on postoperative performance outcomes in athletes. 20,22,31 While many of those have demonstrated high rates of return to play, there appears to be no consensus as to its definition-whether to include practices, preseason games, and so on. 20,31 This, in turn, limits the ability of providers to inform the postoperative expectations of athletes as they weigh their options and determine whether hip arthroscopy is the optimal treatment.…”

The aim of the present study was therefore to review and critically evaluate the various definitions of return to sport used in the literature, with the goal of establishing a single standard to enable comparison of outcomes in future studies.…”

“…These findings are consistent with existing literature, which supports high return to sport and good performance in professional athletes following hip arthroscopy. [2][3][4][5][6] In The Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell asserts that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any field. 7 Professional athletes possess an unparalleled amount of determination, will, and resilience, which not only place them in the elite few, but also keep them at the highest level year after year.…”
