Revealing Structural Detail in the High Temperature La2Si2O7–Y2Si2O7 Phase Diagram by Synchrotron Powder Diffraction and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Abstract: High resolution synchrotron powder XRD, 89 Y CPMG NMR, and 139 La MAS NMR spectroscopy have been applied to eventually draw the phase diagram of the La 2 Si 2 O 7 −Y 2 Si 2 O 7 system. The diagram presents a solid solubility region of G-(La,Y) 2 Si 2 O 7 , which extends to the La 0.9 Y 1.1 Si 2 O 7 composition at any temperature of this study. Compositions richer in Y show two-phase domains, with G + α at T < 1450 °C and G + δ at T > 1450 °C. The Y-rich extreme is more complex, showing two solid solution regio… Show more

“…This linear increase of the shifts with increasing Np/(U + Np) content is in agreement with the existence of a solid solution through the entire composition as observed by XRD. In fact, similar variations of the shifts were observed by NMR in alkaline-earth ,, and rare-earth solid solutions . The variation of the shift of each unit with total composition can be thus deemed as an NMR analogue to the Vegard Law’s.…”

“…In fact, similar variations of the shifts were observed by NMR in alkaline-earth 27,31,32 and rare-earth solid solutions. 15 The variation of the shift of each unit with total composition can be thus deemed as an NMR analogue to the Vegard Law's. The variation of the shifts is more pronounced in our series of solid solution due to the paramagnetic effect, which can be very sensitive to any local distortions.…”

“…The disorder is obtained from its distribution ΔC Q and also the ε parameter inherent to the extended-Czjzek model. This analysis, coupled to the 89 Y NMR experiments, 2 which also resolve the crystallographic sites and show increasing line width with substitution, offers a unique way of quantifying very precisely the extent of structural distribution present in crystallized samples. Structural models can then be validated with this type of information using first-principle calculation (vide infra).…”
