Reversal of SARS-CoV2-Induced Hypoxia by Nebulized Sodium Ibuprofenate in a Compassionate Use Program

Abstract: Introduction Sodium ibuprofenate in hypertonic saline (NaIHS) administered directly to the lungs by nebulization and inhalation has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects, with the potential to deliver these benefits to hypoxic patients. We describe a compassionate use program that offered this therapy to hospitalized COVID-19 patients. Methods NaIHS (50 mg ibuprofen, tid) was provided in addition to standard of care (SOC) to hospitalized COVID-19 patients until ox… Show more

“…Dear Editor, As recently published, the reversal of SARS-CoV2induced hypoxia has been demonstrated with the administration of the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug inhaled sodium ibuprofenate in hypertonic saline formulation (NaIHS) immersed within a compassionate use program of patients with moderate and severe Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pneumonia in Argentina. 1 Nonetheless, the underlying mechanisms of such effect remain unknown. 1 Therefore, we hereby attempt to postulate the potential mechanisms upon which NaIHS exerts the aforementioned beneficial effects, possibly related to indirect inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) hyperproduction and to COVID-19 pneumonia type L. 2 This vasoplegic form of presentation was termed type L and may present from its onset in up to 70%-80% of cases.…”
