Reverse facial artery–submental artery mandibular osteomuscular flap for the reconstruction of maxillary defects following the removal of benign tumors

Abstract: The reverse facial artery-submental artery mandibular osteomuscular flap is safe, quick, and simple to elevate. The flap can be used reliably for reconstructing maxillary defects.

“…The flap is considered to be safe, quick and simple to elevate, and produces minimal donor-site morbidity (Chen et al, 2008). The reverse facial artery-submental artery mandibular osteomuscular flap was used to reconstruct the maxilla of 8 patients who underwent resection for benign tumours involving the maxilla (Chen et al, 2009), and the reverse facial artery-submental artery deepithelialised submental island flap was used to reconstruct facial contour deformities in the middle and upper face of 5 patients who had benign tumours involving the cheek and inferior temple. The outcome of both techniques was reported to be excellent (Chen et al, 2010).…”

“…13 The reverse facial-submental artery mandibular osteomuscular flap had been used for reconstructing maxillary defects after the removal of benign tumors. 14 In this study, reverse facial-submental artery island flaps were used to reconstruct the maxillas in 12 patients with palate squamous cell carcinoma or maxillary gingival squamous cell carcinoma. There were no complications involving the flap or the donor site.…”

“…It is used mainly for reconstruction of the fl oor of the mouth and the oral cavity. It is particularly useful for reconstruction of the tongue and alveolar ridge and can be combined with mandibular bone tissue, thus making it an osteomyocutaneous fl ap for the reconstruction of inferior lateral maxillary defects [ 97 ]. However, the submental fl ap is not our preferred technique for this type of defect.…”
