Reverse mentoring to enhance research integrity climate

Abstract: Mentors have the responsibility to guide their mentees through academic and scientific challenges that they might encounter during their educational and professional development. In embodying the role of mentors, senior academics are also expected to transmit knowledge and competencies on the topic of research integrity to their junior colleagues. However, senior academics do not always succeed in transmitting responsible research practices and enhancing the research integrity climate. The implementation of th… Show more

“…Assuming this group then has more opportunities to learn about open and responsible research, it begs the question of who teaches who. On this note, Pizzolato and Dierickx propose it might be useful to have Ph.D. candidates mentor their supervisors when it comes to matters of research integrity ( Pizzolato and Dierickx, 2022 ).…”

“…In terms of teaching responsible research practices, all supervisors and senior members of the team act as mentors and influence ECRs and PhD researchers. In addition, peer mentoring and reverse mentoring can play a crucial role in elevating research team awareness and competences in terms of responsible research practices (Farid et al, 2022; Pizzolato and Dierickx, 2022b). In this way, ECRs and PhD researchers can proactively contribute to the discussion and bring new insights related to responsible practices and open science.…”

“…The practice may not apply to the participant's research area or study phase, there may be obstacles to implementing the practice in the participant's research project, or the participant's advisors or co-authors may resist certain practices. Highlight the potential for "reverse mentoring", where participants can serve as mentors to their own supervisors on specific topics [63]. Prepare participants to address common concerns or barriers that may be raised by co-authors [24].…”
