In the last years, the European Commission has adopted restrictive directives on food quality and safety in order to protect animal and human health. Veterinary drugs represent an important risk and the need to have sensitive and fast analytical techniques to detect and quantify them has become mandatory. Over the years, the availability of different modes, interfaces, and formats has improved the versatility, sensitivity, and speed of capillary electrophoresis (CE) techniques. Thus, CE represents a powerful tool for the analysis of a large variety of food matrices and food-related molecules with important applications in food quality and safety. This review focuses the attention of CE applications over the last decade on the detection of different classes of drugs (used as additives in animal food or present as contaminants in food products) with a potential risk for animal and human health. In addition, considering that the different sample preparation procedures have strongly contributed to CE sensitivity and versatility, the most advanced sample pre-concentration techniques are discussed here.

Antibiotics are widely used to prevent or treat some diseases in human and veterinary medicine and also as animal growth promoters. The presence of these compounds in foods derived from food‐producing animals can be a risk for human health. Consequently, regulatory agencies have set maximum residue limits for antibiotics in food samples. Therefore, the development of novel methodologies for its determination in food samples is required. Specifically, the analysis and quantification of these substances in meat tissues is a challenge for the analytical chemistry research community. This is due to the complexity of the matrix and the low detection limits required by the regulatory agencies. In this sense, a comprehensive review on the development of new sample preparation treatments involving extraction, cleanup, and enrichment steps of antibiotics in meat samples in combination with sensitive and sophisticated determination techniques that have been carry out in the last years is necessary. Therefore, the aim of this work is to summarize the published methodologies for the determination of antibiotics from 2016 until the beginning of the second semester of 2020. The first part of this review includes an introduction about antibiotic families, followed by sample preparation and determination techniques applied to the different families. Finally, a detailed discussion of the current trends and the future possible perspectives in this field are also included.

Today, due to the growth of the pharmaceutical industry and the high consumption of drugs, monitoring of drug residues in environmental samples because of their destructive effects on the environment and humans is essential. In the present work, ultrasound‐assisted emulsification‐microextraction coupled with high‐performance liquid chromatography as a simple and fast method was applied for simultaneous determination of paracetamol and caffeine in the aqueous samples. Effective parameters on the extraction efficiencies of these analytes such as type and volume of extraction solvent, pH of sample solution, salt concentration, sonication, and centrifuging times were studied and optimized. Under the optimum conditions, the calibration graphs were linear in the range of 30.0–1100.0 ng/mL for paracetamol and 50.0–400.0 ng/mL for caffeine. The limits of detection were 9.7 and 15.2 ng/mL for paracetamol and caffeine, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied for the determination of these drugs in different aqueous samples.
