“…Lopez et al (1993) showed that aasarone was highly toxic to rat hepatocytes in uitro. The United States Food and Drug Administration has prohibited the use of the essential oil from Acorus calamus which had been used to flavour vermouths, bitters and liquors (Micali et al, 1980) Despite the potent and broad-spectrum activity shown by the hexane extract of Acorus gramineus it is unlikely that the isolated compounds could ever be of any use in the treatment of parasitic disease due to their toxic and carcinogenic properties. It is worrying that plants containing these carcinogenic asarones are still widely used in traditional medicine in China, India and Mexico and also that in most European countries including Great Britain the presence of @-asarone as a flavouring agent is still permitted in alcoholic beverages up to a concentration of 1 mg/kg (Micah et al, 1980).…”

“…Numerous high‐performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) and gas chromatographic–mass spectrometry (GC‐MS) methods have been reported for quantification of BAS from raw materials and commercial formulations (Curro et al ., ; Micali et al ., ; Yu et al ., ). Although various studies have reported the pharmacological action of BAS in recent years, there are limited assays available for the quantification of BAS in biological fluids.…”

“…Many published methods exist for the determination of RS in finished foods and beverages, of which a selection is given in the References section, but there are only a few that refer to their determination in compound flavourings or their raw materials . The latter mainly concern the analysis in single essential oils of one or two individual RS, and are often based on a direct gas chromatography (GC) or liquid chromatography (LC) analysis.…”
