Reversible addition of protic molecules to co-ordinated di-2-pyridyl ketone in palladium(II), platinum(II), and gold(III) complexes. X-Ray crystal structures of dichloro(dihydroxy-di-2-pyridylmethane)palladium(II) and dichloro(dihydroxy-di-2-pyridylmethane)gold(III) chloride

Abstract: Palladium(ll), platinum(ll), and gold(ll1) species react with di-2-pyridyl ketone (dpk) to give complexes in which one or two ligand molecules in the original keto-or in a newly formed diolic form are co-ordinated to the metal cation, namely: [PdCl,(dpk.HX)] [X = OH ( l ) , OMe (2), or OEt (3)] ; [PdCl,(dpk)], (4) ; [Pd(dpk* H20),] [CIO,],, (5) ; [PtCl,(dpk)], (6) ; [AuC12(dpk.H20)1CI, (7) ; and [Au(dpk*H,O),] [C104]3, (8). In solution, all species undergo either addition or release of the protic molecules dep… Show more

“…As can be observed from the listed data in Table 3, the N-M(II) distances in these compounds are essentially the same and similar to other previously reported for dipyridine and pyridine complexes containing N-M bonds ( M= Pd, Pt). 2,4,11,14,22,23 The close similitude of the Pt-Cl and Pd-Cl bond distances in complexes 3 and 4 can be attributed to the lanthanide contraction effect present in the 5d platinum(II) cation. With regard to the conformational features displayed by the complexes 3 and 4 where sixmembered chelate rings were formed, the central ring in both complexes is in a boat conformation.…”

“…The nucleophilic addition of H 2 O 2 to the carbonyl group of ketones leading to the formation of peroxoketals was documented in the literature [36e38]. The coordination of the dpk ligand to Pd II center enhances the reactivity of its carbonyl group toward nucleophilic attack [30,31]. Notably, free dpk ligand dissolved in acetic acid solution showed negligible reactivity toward a large excess of H 2 O 2 under analogous conditions.…”

“…Its 13 C NMR spectrum in DOAc-d 4 /D 2 O solution confirms the absence of the carbonyl signal of the dpk in the major product 4 and exhibits the resonance of the gem-diol carbon at 105.5 ppm. The X-ray structure of 4 and its formation in aqueous solution have previously been reported in the literature [30,31].…”
