Reversible Bronchiectasis in an Adult

Abstract: Bronchiectasis is classically defined as irreversible bronchial dilatation that represents the sequelae of chronic airway inflammation and is permanent, reflecting the presence of bronchiectasis. It is increasingly being recognized with the wider availability of high-resolution computed tomography. In contrast to adults, children with noncystic fibrosis bronchiectasis may have resolution or significant improvement in bronchial dilatation. We report a case of reversible bronchial dilatation in an adult as evide… Show more

“…Bronchiectasis is generally defined as an irreversible widening of the airway. The reversibility of radiological bronchiectasis has been discussed in a number of case reports [42,43], and in a few small retrospective studies including both adult and paediatric patients [44][45][46][47]. A few critical notes are needed.…”

“…A few critical notes are needed. In some of these papers [43], the methodology of both image acquisition and analysis are not well defined. This is highly relevant, as a volumetric CT protocol is required to allow a slice by slice comparison at identical anatomical levels between the baseline scan and the follow-up scan.…”

“…1,2 Bronchiectasis can develop as a result of different airway insults and is a chronic infective and inflammatory respiratory disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality. [3][4][5][6] Bronchiectasis may cause pulmonary infections and loss of lung function.…”

“…[ 2 ] Diagnosis has been greatly facilitated by high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). [ 1 , 2 ] There had been several case reports [ 4 6 ] of complete disappearance of bronchial dilatation in adults demonstrated by bronchography 50 years ago and a case report [ 7 ] as evidenced by HRCT 5 years ago.…”
