Review of animal mycoses in Australia

Abstract: This review covers the available literature on the mycoses of animals in Australia since the last review published in 1967. Of the cutaneous infections, dermatophytoses have been recorded in a wide range of animals: cattle, horses, goats, pigs, sheep, cats, dogs, mice, guinea-pigs, rabbits, a lion, kangaroos, a camel, koalas and wallabies. These infections were caused by several species and varieties of the genera, Microsporum and Trichophyton. Eight agents of ringworms have been recorded in the horse. Two sub… Show more

“…Pathology in Verruconis is restricted to V. gallopava, which is the main agent of human brain infections and is responsible for encephalitis in poultry and wild birds (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12)(13)(14)(15), dogs (16), and cats (17). In contrast, Ochroconis species are mesophilic saprobes, with an optimum growth temperature between 15 and 30°C and an inability to grow at 37°C, which occasionally infect cold-blooded vertebrates (1,18).…”

“…However, no clinical details were ever published. O. gallopavum is geographically widely distributed and is known to occur in Australia [2], South Africa [12], Japan [5], United Kingdom [9], and the United States [1,6-8, 10, 12, 13]. Known details of all of the avian outbreaks of encephalitis due to this agent have suggested the importance of environmental conditions favourable to the growth of this thermotolerant fungus.…”
