Review of antimicrobial resistance surveillance programmes in livestock and meat in EU with focus on humans

Abstract: Characterization of AMR genes in livestock is applied heterogeneously among countries. Most antibiotics of human interest are included in animal surveillance, although results are difficult to compare as a result of lack of representativeness of animal samples. We suggest that EU/EEA countries provide better uniform AMR monitoring and reporting in livestock and link them better to surveillance systems in humans. Reducing the delay between data collection and publication is also important to allow prompt identi… Show more

“…Hence, prevention of CRE occurrence and spread in wildlife, food-producing, and companion animals should be a major public health priority to protect both persons with direct (occupational) exposure and consumers [4]. Authorities in European countries have already reacted by establishing antimicrobial resistance monitoring programmes in food-producing animals [16].…”

“…12 EFSA also publishes annually the "Trends and sources of zoonoses and zoonotic agents in foodstuffs, animals and feeding stuffs" 13 report ("EFSA report" onwards) for those countries which have not published this information. The European Animal Health Study Center (CEESA) 14 is a non-governmental organization financed by the veterinary pharmaceutical industry doing research on AMR. Two relevant CEESA subsystems for this review are the VetPath monitoring system and the European Antimicrobial Susceptibility Surveillance in Animals (EASSA).…”

“…It is important that national surveillance systems involve data collection and assessment of both antimicrobial consumption and resistance across human, animal, and environmental health sectors, as well as the provision of adequate laboratories, equipment and technical expertise necessary. [40][41][42][43] Surveillance metrics should include the overall quantity of antimicrobials used as well as an assessment of both appropriate and inappropriate use. It is also important that there is adequate laboratory capacity and capability supported by a regular programme of external quality assessments.…”
