“…A by-product from mining, smelting, and refining zinc, lead, and copper ores, cadmium use substantially increased during the last decades of the 20th century, particularly in nickel-cadmium batteries and in coating plastic stabilizers [59]. Soil contamination of cadmium is a main environmental problem because vegetables and grains bioconcentrate cadmium from soil, resulting in major cadmium exposure through diet and smoking [59,63]. Other dietary sources of cadmium include shellfish and organ meats.…”

“…This indicates that the risk for non carcinogenic health impact of Cd for these respondents is acceptable. According to (Lalor, 2008), there have been several cases of apparently high exposures to cadmium without accompanying health effects in France, Germany, United Kingdom (UK) and the United States (US). In addition, there may be numerous other confounding factors including cadmium bioavailability differences among vegetables, the percentage absorption of dietary cadmium in a population, genetics, lifestyle, diet and antagonistic or synergistic exposures to other elements, interpretations in "normal" ß-microglobulin and the effect of aging that may influence the occurrence of cadmium poisoning among the respondents.…”

“…In some cases, however, few human health effects have been reported in countries with some of the highest naturally occurring soil Cd concentrations (Lalor et al, 2008). It is believed that a better understanding of the interaction of Cd with other elements may provide the key to understanding the effects of Cd on health.…”
