Review of Designs for Haptic Data Visualization

Abstract: Abstract-There are many different uses for haptics, such as training medical practitioners, teleoperation or navigation of virtual environments. This review focuses on haptic methods that display data. The hypothesis is that, haptic devices can be used to present information, and consequently the user gains quantitative, qualitative or holistic knowledge about the presented data. Not only is this useful for users who are blind or partially sighted (who can feel line graphs, for instance), but the haptic modali… Show more

“…We could use our current scenario management system. Indeed other modalities such as haptics [45]) could be added to the environment to develop a more realistic interactive experience. However, the use of SL has several advantages: it enables other views to readily access the world, enables quick building of rooms and buildings…”

“…Rowell and Ungar [2003a,b] did a thorough review of projects in this area. A broader analysis, that also included networks or images was done by Panëels and Roberts [2010]. Most of these systems used external haptic interfaces or devices, e.g., the PHANToM (e.g., Massie and Salisbury [1994]; McGookin and Brewster [2007]; Yu and Brewster [2003]).…”

“…modalities could be added into the world (such as haptics [35]) to develop a more realistic interactive experience. Our aspiration is to explore a self-made solution once we have investigated the associated user experience of interpreter students and clients, through the current generation of prototypes.…”
