Located in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, the Doñana salt marshes occupy around half of Doñana National Park and are currently considered among the most important wetlands worldwide due to the importance of their ecosystem. In this research work, using a novel patented procedure, the effects of climate change on the study area between 2009 and 2020 were evaluated. For this reason, DEMs were downloaded from the 30-meter Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM). Furthermore, to check the depth of the flooded area, 792 satellite images (L5 TM, L7 ETM+, and L8 OLI) with a resolution of 30 m were analyzed. The results show how the combined use of geomatic techniques, such as radar, optical, and geographic information system (GIS) data, along with regression models and iterative processes, plays a key role in the prediction and analysis of the flooded area volume in the Doñana salt marshes. Another significant contribution of this work is the development of a new remote sensing index. In conclusion, given that the study area depends on its aquifers’ status, it would be advisable to implement policies aimed at eradicating illegal aquifer extraction, as well as recovery plans to avoid the complete clogging of this salt marsh.

Long-Term Impacts of Runoff and Coastal Reclamation on Tidal Bore Variations in the Qiantang River Estuary, China

Tidal bore dynamics in estuarine environments are influenced by both natural hydrological changes and human activities, such as coastal reclamation. This study focuses on the Qiantang River estuary, assessing the impacts of runoff variations and reclamation on tidal bores over the past five decades. By employing statistical and time-frequency methods, including the Mann–Kendall test, ordered clustering, and wavelet analysis, the relationships between tidal bore height, river discharge, and reclamation activities are examined. The results indicate that increased freshwater discharge reduces bore intensity over short timescales of 0.3 to 1.2 years, while decreased runoff amplifies it. Over longer periods of 4.1 to 8.3 years, a positive correlation emerges, with changes in runoff preceding variations in tidal bore height. Coastal reclamation, particularly the narrowing of channels, has significantly reduced the bore height at Yanguan, especially in the years following the 2000s. Additionally, the long-term interactions of other factors influencing tidal bores are explored. These findings reveal a delayed estuarine response to human modifications, highlighting the necessity of long-term monitoring and adaptive management strategies to mitigate these impacts. The study provides valuable insights into the complex interplay of natural and human factors, offering guidance for future estuarine management and conservation efforts.

Combining Satellite Imagery and a Deep Learning Algorithm to Retrieve the Water Levels of Small Reservoirs

There are an estimated 800,000 small reservoirs globally with a range of uses. Given the collective importance of these reservoirs to water resource management and wider society, it is essential that we can monitor and understand the hydrological dynamics of ungauged reservoirs, particularly in a changing climate. However, unlike large reservoirs, continuous and systematic hydrological observations of small reservoirs are often unavailable. In response, this study has developed a retrieval framework for water levels of small reservoirs using a deep learning algorithm and remotely sensed satellite data. Demonstrated at four reservoirs in California, satellite imagery from both Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 along with corresponding water level field measurements was collected. Post-processed images were fed into a water level inversion convolutional neural network model for water level inversion, while different combinations of these satellite images, sampling approaches for training/testing data, and attention modules were used to train the model and evaluated for accuracy. The results show that random sampling of training data coupled with Sentinel-2 satellite imagery was generally the most accurate initially. Performance is improved by incorporating a channel attention mechanism, with the average R2 increasing by 8.6% and the average RMSE and MAE decreasing by 15.5% and 36.4%, respectively. The proposed framework was further validated on three additional reservoirs in different regions. In conclusion, the retrieval framework proposed in this study provides a stable and accurate methodology for water level estimation of small reservoirs and can be a powerful tool for small reservoir monitoring over large spatial scales.
