Abstract-Internet infrastructure energy consumption is a major topic of research nowadays due to environmental and economical concerns. Therefore, it is increasingly important new solutions that decrease energy consumption, but without impairing network throughput and costs. Hence, it is important to survey and categorize current techniques, not only applicable to IP networks, but that can also be potentially useful for the future Internet architectures, such as Publish-Subscribe architectures. Therefore, to achieve such goals this paper presents a survey on energy efficient architectures and functional mechanisms (such as energy adaptive routing) for the current and future Internet. The main goals are: to provide an overview of the issues of the current Internet architecture; to identify the contribution of the different proposals for the future Internet architecture; and to discuss energy saving techniques which improve Internet energy efficiency.Index Terms-Energy, future internet architectures, energy efficient routing, traffic engineering, survey.

Energy consumption of communication systems is becoming a fundamental issue and, among all the sectors, wireless access networks are largely responsible for the increase in consumption. In addition to the access segment, wireless technologies are also gaining popularity for the backhaul infrastructure of cellular systems mainly due to their cost and easy deployment. In this context, Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) are commonly considered the most suitable architecture because of their versatility that allows flexible configurations. In this paper we combine the flexibility of WMN with the need for energy consumption reduction by presenting an optimization framework for network management that takes into account the trade off between the network energy needs and the daily variations of the demand. A resolution approach and a thorough discussion on the details related to WMN energy management are also presented.

SUMMARYWith the exponential growth of Internet traffic, the energy consumption issue of core networks is increasingly becoming critical. Today's core networks are highly underutilized most of the time because of the overprovisioning and redundancy dimensioning, which results in severe energy inefficiency. In previous work, many non-deterministic polynomial-time hard mathematics formulation models have been proposed to minimize the energy consumption of core networks. However, effective heuristics are needed to solve these models in medium/large-size networks. This work studies the energy-minimized routing and virtual topology design problem of the power-hungry Internet protocol (IP) layer in core networks, aiming to achieve an energy-proportional IP layer by exploiting the variation of traffic with hours to reconfigure virtual topology and reroute traffic. We formulate energy-minimized routing and virtual topology design as an Integer linear programming problem and propose a LR algorithm, a heuristic based on the Lagrangian relaxation, to solve this problem in a polynomial-time. The simulation results indicate that the LR algorithm outperforms the best previous algorithm and can achieve a near energy-proportional IP layer with significant power saving. Furthermore, a detailed analysis of simulation results is conducted, which suggests a design principle of network equipment to facilitate the power saving.
