BackgroundThe last annotated checklist of marine polychaetes in Greece was published in 2001. Since then, global taxonomic progress, combined with many new species records for Greece, required a thorough review of the taxonomic, nomenclatural and biogeographic status of the national species list. This checklist revises the status of all extant polychaete species reported from the Greek Exclusive Economic Zone since 1832. The work was undertaken as part of the efforts on compiling a national species inventory (Greek Taxon Information System initiative) in the framework of the LifeWatchGreece Research Infrastructure.New informationThis checklist comprises an updated and annotated inventory of polychaete species in Greek waters, compiled from literature reports, online databases, museum collections and unpublished datasets. The list provides information on 836 species-level taxa from Greece, of which 142 are considered questionable. An additional 84 species reported in the past are currently considered absent from Greece; reasons for the exclusion of each species are given. Fourteen species are reported here for the first time from Greek waters. At least 52 species in the present list constitute in fact a complex of cryptic or pseudo-cryptic species. Forty-seven species are considered non-native to the area. In addition to the species-level taxa reported in this checklist, eleven genera have been recorded from Greece with no representatives identified to species level. One replacement name is introduced. For each species, a comprehensive bibliographic list of occurrence records in Greece and the synonyms used in these publications are provided as supplementary material. Where necessary, the taxonomic, nomenclatural or biogeographic status is discussed. Finally, the findings are discussed in the wider context of Mediterranean polychaete biogeography, taxonomic practice and worldwide research progress.

This work is the last of four papers of the Spaghetti Project, aiming to revise the species of terebellids, a.k.a. “spaghetti” worms, present in the European French waters. In this last paper the Terebellidae, sensu stricto, from French waters are revised based, on material available in the French marine stations, type materials stored in the MNHN collection and newly collected specimens. Nine new species are described using both morphological and molecular tools: Eupolymnia gili n. sp., E. lacazei n. sp., E. meissnerae n. sp., Lanice kellyslateri n. sp., Paramphitrite dragovabeci n. sp., Pista labruneae n. sp., P. miosseci n. sp., P. sauriaui n. sp., and Terebella banksyi n. sp. European species of Eupolymnia are distinguished mainly by the shape of the lateral lobes and the size of the branchial stems. The two species belonging to Lanice genus are distinguished by the fusion of the first ventral shields, the shape of both noto- and neuropodia, and the pigmentation of the upper lip. The two species of Paramphitrite are distinguished by the presence or absence of a medial dorsal gap between the pairs of branchiae, by the shape of the lateral lobes and the presence or absence of a nephridial papilla on segment 4. The different species of Pista are distinguished by the number of pairs of branchiae, the shape of the lateral lobes and uncini. Finally, the two species of Terebella are distinguished by the number of segments with nephridial and genital papillae and the segments on which the branchiae occur. An identification key for European species of Terebellidae sensu stricto is also provided.

Non-indigenous polychaetes along the coasts of Italy: a critical review

Non-indigenous species (NIS) represent one of the most relevant threats to biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and human activities, and their occurrence and spread have been the subject of numerous works and revisions. However, the information available is rather confused for several taxa, including polychaetes, which are characterised by having a high number of cryptogenic and questionable species. This work aims at providing a revised checklist of alien polychaetes occurring along the coasts of Italy, based on the examination of newly collected and deposited material and on the critical analysis of published and gray literature, and whenever possible on the re-examination of historical material. Of the 86 polychaete species reported as NIS in Italian waters, 25 are confirmed as alien species, while 3 are cryptogenic, and 40 should be considered questionable. Finally, 18 species were excluded from non-indigenous species checklists, either because they are native, or because they represent misidentifications of other species. The high number of cryptogenic and questionable species points at the need of molecular studies and taxonomic revisions for the majority of polychaete taxa reported as NIS, in order to clarify their taxonomy, origin, introduction pathways and spreading patterns.
