REVIEW OFSCHIZOPHRAGMAOGLOBLIN AND THE NON-AUSTRALIAN SPECIES OFSTETHYNIUMENOCK (HYMENOPTERA: MYMARIDAE)

Abstract: Stethynium Enock, a mainly old world genus most of whose members occur in Australia, is redescribed based on study of the non-Australian species. The subgenus Neostethynium Ogloblin is removed from Stethynium and given generic status. The names S. faunum Girault and S. empoascae Subba Rao are synonymized under S. triclavatum Enock. A lectotype is designated for S. triclavatum. Stethynium angustipennesp. n. is described.Schizophragma Ogloblin, formerly a subgenus of Patasson, is redescribed as a genus. Anaphes … Show more

“…Existing host records indicate that they are parasitoids in eggs of Cicadellidae or Membracidae (Huber 1987;Noyes 2002) and three species, S. flavinotae Girault, S. perlatipenne Girault, and S. notatum Girault, were reared from galls (Girault 1915). Dahms (1984) quoted an unpublished manuscript by Girault that S. immaculatum Girault was reared from a gall on Eucalyptus, and one slide of S. latipenne bears a label stating that this species was ''bred from small galls on surface of leaves'' though the original description does not mention this.…”

“…Stethynium in Australia contains 45 nominal species and two nominal subspecies (Lin et al in press), which represent most of the described world fauna of this genus (Huber 1987). All of the Australian species were described by Girault, usually on the basis of only one slide-mounted specimen in very poor condition.…”

“…Schizophragma contains seven described species distributed in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions (Huber 1987). It is also known as an undescribed species from Australia (Lin et al 2007) which appears to be conspecific with Schizophragma indica described herein.…”

“…As noted by Huber (1987), Schizophragma is close to Stethynium Enock, but differs in a two-segmented clava (except entire in Schizophragma saltensis Ogloblin), presence of one pair of setae on anterior scutellum, mesophragma variously notched at apex, and largely dark brown, and in the male by the encapsulated genitalia. In Stethynium: three-segmented clava with sutures obliquely curved, anterior scutellum without setae, mesophragma with apex rounded, body usually yellow with some parts with brown suffusions, and male genitalia complex and non-encapsulated.…”
