Review of invasive grapevine aphid, Aphis illinoisensis Shimer, and native parasitoids in the Mediterranean (Hemiptera, Aphididae; Hymenoptera, Braconidae, Aphidiinae)

Abstract: A summary of the study of Aphis illinoisensis Shimer on grapes, Vitis vinifera in the Mediterranean area brings references and new findings on its distribution in Crete/Greece, Turkey, Northern Cyprus, Malta, Israel, Montenegro, Tunisia, Algeria and Libya. Parasitoids of A. illinoisensis were only occasionally found (Aphidius matricariae Hal. - Cyprus, Turkey, Greece; Aphidius colemani Viereck - Libya; Lysiphlebus testaceipes Cress. - Algeria). Of the native species, i.e. A. colemani, and others similar … Show more

“…Despite the fact that several members of the genus Closterovirus are transmitted by different species of aphids (87,111), there is no evidence so far for transmission of GLRaV-2 by aphids under experimental or natural conditions. Aphids are not common pests of grapevine, although the grapevine aphid (Aphis illinoisensis) has been reported in several grapevine-growing areas (80,159). However, current evidence indicates that A. illinoisensis is unlikely to serve as a vector for GLRaV-2.…”

“…The presence of L. testaceipes on S. cupressi also supports the positive role of a native parasitoid in bio‐control of new alien aphids in Algeria. This is a similar situation to that determined earlier for the alien pest aphid Aphis illinoisensi s Shim on grapevine in the Mediterranean (Havelka et al ., ).…”

“…A alimentação do afídeo provoca redução do desenvolvimento vegetativo, formação de bifurcações e encarquilhamento de folhas novas e brotos e, em situações de elevada infestação, levam à queda de bagas no período entre a floração e a colheita (Blackman & Eastop, 2006). A espécie é originária da América do Norte, porém, tem-se expandido mundialmente (Havelka et al, 2011;El-Gantiry et al, 2012).…”
