The smart grid has an important subsystem known as the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), responsible for measuring customer consumption of electricity. The AMI subsystem has smart meters as one of the components and they play a vital role in enabling communication between the utility provider and consumers. Smart meters can report real-time electricity consumption readings of the consumer to the utility. Securing this communication link from attacks remain very important for the secure transmission of readings. Different methods or approaches have been developed in the past and most of the works have high computational overheads. This paper proposes a lightweight Concealed Based Security Scheme (CBSS) for secure transmission within the AMI, providing authentication, reducing the computational overheads and energy consumption during transmission. The CBSS method is compared with the AMI Data Communication Scheme (ADCS) which does not have authentication process. The network is built in the Network Simulator 2 environment, showing the communication between the nodes. Further security is provided using a simple encryption/decryption method of 2 random numbers. The contribution of this paper is the proposed lightweight method for the AMI that authenticates the transfer of data between smart meters and other components of the AMI system. The paper also contains a simulation evaluation for the chosen design parameters of the resemblance of AMI network. The simulations show an improvement of 5% in delivery ratio, 3% throughput and 4% on energy consumed when adding security to the network.

The traditional electrical grid has to be digitally improved as digitalization and effective integration of renewable energy bring better efficiency, intelligence, and safety into the grid; hence, the transition from the traditional grid to a smart grid. A smart grid is a modernized and digitalized standard electrical infrastructure that has a key component known as the advanced metering infrastructure (AMI). AMI, also known as smart metering, is a key technological enabler of the smart grid that allows automatic collection and reporting of power-consumed data via two-way communication networks. However, the collected power consumption data is confidential; hence, its privacy must be maintained. Similarly, for the benefit of the smart grid to be consistently maximized, the AMI data and network security must always be intact despite the evolving threats and attacks targeted at it.This paper provides a comprehensive review of the existing vulnerabilities/attacks, security and privacy challenges associated with the smart metering data and network system, its open issues, and future direction. The major contributions of this review paper lie in the AMI vulnerabilities, AMI state-of-the-art security schemes with their pros and cons, its communication protocols analysis, and its emerging security measures. This gave enumerated recommendations for the efficiency improvement of AMI security in terms of its latency reduction while implementing efficient security measures in its future work.

As of the end of March 2023, the cumulative grid-connected capacity of distributed photovoltaics in China was 176.32 GW. In the first quarter of 2023, the new added capacity of it amounted to 18.13 GW. Among them, the addition of grid-connected household-scale photovoltaic capacity was 8.92 GW. The installed capacity and grid-connected capacity continue to maintain a rapid growth trend, with characteristics such as small capacity, large quantity, large load fluctuation, multiple grid-connected points, and difficulty in adjustment. Access to distributed devices on the massive user side cannot be achieved through traditional authentication methods due to their limited resources. Besides, when conducting group dispatching and control for distributed photovoltaic clusters, it is necessary to encrypt and protect the parameters and control command data of group equipment. In response to the above issues, this article studies and proposes a security protection strategy for household distributed photovoltaic clusters. On resource-limited photovoltaic end devices, lightweight authentication of photovoltaic end devices is achieved through a security communication connector embedded with a security module in a software-hardware integrated mode. Then, a photovoltaic cluster data encryption strategy was designed to achieve encrypted transmission of group data, such as parameters and control instructions between intelligent fusion terminals and photovoltaic end devices.
