This study was developed to provide initial information on the chemical distribution of P into the different soil P pools after a soil sample underwent P sorption using 17 soil samples from the united States (13) and Brazil (4). During the sorption phase, soil samples were equilibrated with solutions containing increasing P concentrations (0-75 mg P l -1 ) following standard procedures. Following the sorption phase, the soil samples were allowed to air dry for 72 h and underwent a chemical fractionation (in water, anionic resin, 0.5M NahCo 3 , 0.1M Naoh, and 1.0M hCl). A wide range of sorption strength ranging from 0.043 to 0.289 l kg -1 and a maximum sorption ranging from 189 to 789 mg kg -1 were observed. More than 59% of the sorbed P was found in the water + resin fraction, which is considered the most labile pools where the binding energy is assumed to be low. In contrast, less than 25% of the sorbed P was found in the nonlabile pools where the binding energy is assumed to be the greatest. Although less than 25% of the sorbed P was found in the non-labile pools, the Naoh+hCl fraction contributed 2 to 61% of the overall sorption strength estimated for the soils studied. The results of this study suggest that sorption strength calculated from sorption studies are heavily skewed toward the nonlabile fraction, which was found to constitute a very small portion of the binding sites occupied during sorption studies.Abbreviations: b, the sorption maximum; ICP-OES, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy; b f , sorption maximum determined using the sequential fractionation data; b i , sorption maximum estimated using the method of Nair et al. W hen P is added to soils in the form of fertilizer, a series of reactions takes place, ranging from diffusion of P from the fertilizer granules into the soil solution, sorption of P into soil particles, and, with time, P precipitation (Hedley and McLaughlin, 2005). In the soil, inorganic P (P i ) will adsorb or precipitate by chemically binding with Al, Fe, or Ca (Lombi et al., 2006;Khatiwada et al., 2012;Eriksson et al., 2015). AVAIL, a maleic‐itaconic copolymer acid marketed to enhance P fertilizers, has been studied on a variety of crop species. Data from all known field studies comparing P fertilization with and without AVAIL was amassed into a meta‐analysis of 503 field observations. The average yield increase was a modest, although statistically significant, 2.1% (P < 0.0001). However, only 116 of these observations were conducted under conditions where a positive yield response to a P enhancement product would be expected– that is, low soil test phosphorus (STP), strong alkaline or acid pH, and low P fertilizer rate. As such, the data was parsed into a subset of only those observations that were evaluated under responsive conditions, resulting in a greater magnitude of a yield response to AVAIL at 4.6% (P < 0.0001). Further parsing of the data, by eliminating any data not published in refereed or thesis/dissertation sources resulted in an average increase of 5.8% (P = 0.0039). AVAIL effectively increased yields when used appropriately under conditions where a P response was expected. Testing enhanced efficiency fertilizer products in a variety of conditions is useful, but the conclusions from the multitude of studies with AVAIL in environments where no response to P fertilizer enhancement product would be expected may lead to erroneous conclusions if the data is not further parsed and categorized. These data demonstrate the importance of applying fundamental soil fertility principles when designing and evaluating fertilizer crop response studies.

Agronomic efficiency of organomineral fertilizer in sequential grain crops in southern Brazil

The use of organomineral fertilizers in agriculture instead of mineral fertilizers is a way to add organic compounds to the soil, potentially improving its properties and crop production. Our objective was to evaluate the agronomic efficiency of an organomineral fertilizer manufactured from poultry litter and mineral fertilizers. The experiment was carried out in a Humic Cambisol in the subtropical region of Brazil, with high organic matter content, low phosphorus content, and very high potassium content. The study consisted of six treatments: mineral fertilizer (monoammonium phosphate, KCl, and urea), at rates of 100 and 150% of the technical recommendation; organic fertilizer (poultry litter), at 100% rate; organomineral fertilizer (poultry litter + monoammonium phosphate), at rates of 100 and 150%; and control treatment (without fertilization). Between 2015 and 2017, common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris), wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), and corn (Zea mays L.) were sequentially cultivated. Before performing the experiment and at the end of the fourth crop, chemical properties of the soil were analyzed in the 0‐ to 10‐ and 10‐ to 20‐cm layers. The use of fertilizers increased crop yield, but there was no difference between the three fertilizer sources or between the 100 and 150% rates of the technical recommendation. Chemical properties of the soil were altered in a similar manner with fertilization, regardless of the fertilizer source used. According to the results, the organomineral fertilizer can replace mineral fertilizers with equivalent performance.
