Review of Modern Nondestructive Testing Techniques for Civil Infrastructure

Abstract: The repair and maintenance of aging infrastructures, in the United States alone, are estimated to have backlogs of trillions of dollars. This has posed widespread concerns about the existing and proposed infrastructures to adequately sustain the quality of life in the near future. Efficient and cost-effective approaches, such as nondestructive testing (NDT), are therefore required to better shape our future. Various NDT techniques have been developed over the past two decades with cutting-edge advances towards… Show more

“…NDT methods have been increasingly used for quality control, quality assurance and quality assessment of both new and old structures [33][34][35]. Many NDT techniques, such as visual inspection (VT) [36,37], tap testing (TT) [38][39][40][41][42], impact echo testing (IE) [43][44][45][46][47], microwave testing (MW) [48][49][50][51][52][53], ground penetrating radar (GPR) [54][55][56][57][58], ultrasonic testing (UT) or phased array ultrasonic testing (PAU) [59][60][61][62][63][64], infrared thermography testing (IR) [56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64], acoustic emission testing (AE) [65][66][67][68], laser testing (LT) [69][70]…”

“…On the other hand, Pattern cracking is formed on concrete surfaces repeatedly, resulting from shrink of the material near the surface, an increase in the volume (swell) of the material below the surface, or both [12]. Map cracks generally result from a decrease in the volume of the material near the surface or an increase in sub-surface material volume [17,13].…”
