Review of Notacanthella Jacobus & McCafferty, 2008 (Ephemeroptera: Ephemerellidae) in Thailand, with the redescription of Notacanthella commodema (Allen, 1971)

Abstract: Larvae of the Notacanthella Jacobus & McCafferty, 2008 species N. commodema (Allen, 1971) and N. quadrata (Kluge & Zhou, 2004) from Thailand are compared and redescribed. Both species have serrations on maxillary canines, as does N. perculta (Allen, 1971) from Vietnam, and this contributes to synonymizing the subgenus Samiocca Jacobus & McCafferty, 2008 under Notacanthella s.s. (= Samiocca n. syn.). The Thailand species can be differentiated by the numbers of thoracic and abdominal tubercles. In ad… Show more

“…The pair of sub-median tubercles in the middle of mesonotum of early stages is prominent and variable in number, 2 or 4 tubercles (Fig. 3b) which is similar to other Ephemerellidae such as Notacanthella commodema (Allen, 1971) in which the tubercle numbers reduce and are more flattened in later stages (Auychinda et al 2020b). On the contrary, the posterior median tubercle is distinct in all larval stages of the new species.…”

“…All of the species in these five genera, except for the type species of Notacanthella , have nymphs with a denticulate blade on the apex of the maxilla ( Jacobus and McCafferty 2008 ). Distinctions between these genus groups ( Jacobus and McCafferty 2008 ) were based mostly on exact combinations of nymphal thoracic projections and questionable qualities of the maxillary blade, at least some of which have been shown to be unreliable ( Auychinda et al 2020b ). Zhang et al (2021) also showed that some species based on male adults had been incorrectly assigned to genus.…”

“…They have been used as indicators of water quality [ 6 , 7 , 8 , 9 ]. Recently, the diversity of Thai mayflies is provided (e.g., Baetidae [ 10 , 11 , 12 ], Ephemerellidae [ 13 ], Heptageniidae [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], Leptophlebiidae [ 17 , 18 ], Prosopistomatidae [ 19 ], Teloganodidae [ 20 ], Tricorythidae [ 21 ]). Vietnamellidae is a monogeneric family of mayflies found only in the Indomalayan biogeographic realm.…”
