Review of occupational lung carcinogens

Abstract: Lung cancer is the most common malignancy in the United States and is ranked second only to bladder cancer in the proportion of cases thought to be due to occupational exposures. We review the epidemiology of occupational lung cancer, focusing on agents identified as pulmonary carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. We derive estimates of overall relative risks from the major studies of these lung carcinogens, and we also provide estimates of the number of exposed workers. Using our dat… Show more

“…Although most lung cancer is related to tobacco use, it is ranked second only to bladder cancer in the proportion of cases thought to be due to occupational exposures (Steenland et al, 1996). Chromosomal deletion of 8p21-22 is one of the most common findings in cytogenetic studies and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) analysis in NSCLC (Niklinski et al, 2001;Pei et al, 2001;Minna et al, 2002).…”

Different risk factors for human NSCLC, such as cigarette smoking or exposure to occupational carcinogens (Steenland et al, 1996), possess the ability to induce either genomic deletion or aberrant DNA methylation . Therefore, DLC-1 may be a target of these risk factors in human lung cancer.…”

“…Similar findings reported from mainland China, Hong Kong and Singapore showed significant relationships between smoking habit and lung cancer [10, 45,56]. At present, many occupations, industries, and specific chemical substances have been associated with a well established or suspected excess risk of lung cancer [57,58].…”

“…(6) Exposure to asbestos, alone, is estimated to be responsible for at least half of the cases of lung cancer attributable to occupation. (7,8) Recently, the Brazilian National Ministry of Health issued a decree making it mandatory that cases of occupational lung cancer be reported. (9) The Social Security Regulation-Decree 3048/99, amended by Decree no.…”
