IntroductionThe literature is limited on the impact of neighborhood parks on quality of life (QoL) and the mechanism linking them.MethodsIn this paper, we applied the structural equation model to data from a cross-sectional sample of 650 participants in low-income communities of New York City, we examined the associations of neighborhood park use vs. park perception and QoL, and whether these associations were mediated through self-reported perceived stress. We also examined whether park use mediated the relationship between park perception and QoL.ResultsWe found that park use had a significant but weak association with QoL (standardized β = 0.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.02, 0.15, p = 0.02), but this relationship was not mediated by self-reported stress. Park perception was more strongly associated with QoL than park use (standardized β = 0.23, 95% CI: 0.16, 0.30, p < 0.01), and this was partly mediated by self-reported stress (indirect effect- standardized β = 0.08, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.13, p < 0.01) and, to a lesser extent, by park use (indirect effect- standardized β = 0.01, 95% CI: 0.00, 0.02, p = 0.01).DiscussionHaving well-perceived parks appears to be an important factor for QoL independent of park use, suggesting that quality parks may benefit everyone in a community beyond park users. This strengthens the argument in favor of increasing park investment as a strategy to improve population wellbeing.

Planners need to fully understand the quantity of land supply and its matching relationship with population demand, as these are prerequisites for urban greenspace planning. Most papers have focused on single cities and parks, with little attention paid to comparative analysis between multiple cities on a macro scale, ignoring the influence of spatial effects and leading to a lack of basis for regional green infrastructure planning. This paper selected 102 cities in Hunan province as case studies to comprehensively conduct empirical research using the spatial mismatch model and the geographically weighted regression method. The urban parkland in Hunan province are characterized by significant spatial heterogeneity and correlation, and the mismatch between land supply and population demand should not be ignored, with oversupply and undersupply co-existing. The urban parkland and its mismatch with population are influenced by a number of factors, and each factor has a stronger influence on the latter than the former. Different factors vary widely in the nature and intensity of their effects, and the dynamics are more complex. Economic development, financial capacity, and air quality are key factors, with the former having a negative impact and the latter having opposite (positive) effects. We suggest that when the government allocates land resources and targets for urban parks, it should formulate a differentiated allocation plan based on the supply and demand conditions of each city; besides, it should also place emphasis on regional integration and coordination and support mutual cooperation.

Urban and urban-adjacent green spaces have become more relevant for home buyers in the United States in recent years, with greater preference for the inclusion of natural environments within urban and suburban areas. The dominant explanation for this phenomenon is the mental and physical health advantages associated with physical activity and social spaces. Previous research has also determined that homeowner willingness-to-pay varies across urban green space type, size, and access while also varying across neighborhood and region. However, no studies have been conducted focusing on urban green spaces within physically active communities. This study uses data from Boulder County, Colorado and the United States Geological Survey to analyze the correlation between proximity to urban green spaces and property sale prices in a community which prioritizes healthy and sustainable living. The results in this study found that proximity to cemeteries, city-owned open space, city parks, national forest, and recreational spaces were positively correlated with property sale price, while proximity to county-owned open space, city-designated natural lands, and undeveloped green spaces were negatively correlated with property sale price. This supports previous conclusions regarding urban green space type and property prices, while expanding the literature on how physically active "outdoorsy" communities value urban green spaces.
