Review of the seakeeping criteria for the study of a passenger ship criteria in Indonesian water

Abstract: The human sickness of the ship’s crews and passengers is considered as main requirements to be fulfilled in ship design stages which is related to the performance of ship motion when operating in seaway. This paper describe review some seakeeping criteria which are published by several institutions for the purpose of ship safety and comfort. Since these criteria were initially issued based on extreme sea conditions, it is necessary to study if they are applied to relatively moderate sea conditions in Indonesia… Show more

“…The application of equation ( 3) in the field of marine and marine engineering has been introduced by Weinblum & St. Denis (1950) and St. Denis & Pierson (1953) [1], which shown as illustration in Figure 2. The equation to get the ship's response should be done smoothing and filtering the results of FFT [1,14,15]. This is intended to eliminate noise that occurs in the result data and to get more accurate results.…”

“…In direct measurement, three important factors must be considered to give the appropriate results including (i) the accuracy of the instrument device, (ii) the accuracy of the measurement process, and (iii) the processing of the measurement data recorded. In the previous paper [14], an analysis of the selection of tools and determination of the measurement location was introduced. Meanwhile, the identification method of fast ship motion using direct measurements technique is presented in this paper.…”

“…In many parts of Indonesia, inter-island passenger transportation is used, therefore ensuring the safety and comfort of the ship takes greater care. The Malacca Strait is a waterway that is passed by many passenger ships [1], for example, fast passenger ships operating from Bengkalis to Batam port, Indonesia. The data also shows that there are frequent accidents on the track in this area [2].…”

“…Up until now, the standard used to determine ship comfort has been seakeeping criteria at the time of shipbuilding design. However, this is not sufficient as a design criterion alone [1], and measurement of navigational quality under service conditions [3] must be carried out because comfort is a key parameter in the design and operation of passenger ships. The main factors affecting comfort are the motion and acceleration experienced by ships while sailing rough waves, which are known to have an impact on passenger comfort and hamper navigational tasks for the crew [4].…”
