Review of the Use of Fire Dynamics Theory in Fire Service Activities

Abstract: The work of the fire service has changed during the last decades from being essentially operational to include a larger variety of activities to increase fire safety in society. Also, the theoretical understanding of fire development, fire dynamics in buildings and fire safety engineering have improved. There are several good examples of areas were fire dynamics theories have supported and improved the fire service activities associated with building fire safety during the last decades. Despite such examples t… Show more

“…Fast developing fires may be included as shock-training where regular planning fails, and scenario-based interviews [72] may reveal opportunities regarding better emergency management [73,74]. The 2014 Laerdalsøyri and Flatanger fires [8,36] represent cases where more use of fire dynamics theories in the operational area for low frequency long duration events could be beneficial [75].…”

“…For a building fire, the heat release rate (HRR) is one of the most critical parameters in characterizing the fire behavior and hazard [1]. Inside a room or compartment, the fire HRR is a key parameter for judging critical events, such as the flashover and burning duration [2,3], conducting fire suppression operations, and making fire rescue decisions [4]. Although the state-of-the-art numerical models can predict fire development and smoke motion, these models rely on the temperature data from sensor networks that are not available in most buildings [5][6][7][8][9].…”
