Review of Wearable Sensor-Based Health Monitoring Glove Devices for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract: Early detection of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and other neurological conditions is vital for effective treatment. Existing methods of detecting RA rely on observation, questionnaires, and physical measurement, each with their own weaknesses. Pharmaceutical medications and procedures aim to reduce the debilitating effect, preventing the progression of the illness and bringing the condition into remission. There is still a great deal of ambiguity around patient diagnosis, as the difficulty of measurement has redu… Show more

“…Consequently, anthropometric dimensions have significant differences among individuals, including hand size, fingers, length and thickness. Glove-based systems must then be associated with various finger joint locations for various people, which would have an influence on the overall measurements accuracy [5].…”

“…The body-worn sensors generate data that can accurately reflect disease activity, flareups, and the degree of functional disability after a therapeutic intervention ( 45 ). Results can then be visualized to therefore provide individual support and recommendations and to improve therapy management and outcomes ( 46 ). Imaging is also an important factor for the detection of disease activity.…”

“…A great number of technology-aided approaches for upper limb assessment have been reported in literature in recent years, despite very few of them have been used for hand functional assessment issues. Reviews exist presenting overviews of quantitative assessment instruments applied to a specific cohort of subjects carrying upper limb disorders [ 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ]. Nevertheless, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, no published work provides a comprehensive state of the art about quantitative methods based on emerging technologies that focus on hand functional assessment.…”
