Review on current concepts of myopia and its control strategies

Abstract: Myopia poses a significant burden on the healthcare system, economy and quality of life. It is an emerging global public health challenge and requires interventions to delay or stop onset and progression. With changing times and evidence, the concepts of myopia are changing along with the treatment and control strategies. Behavioural modifications including increased outdoors time and reduced near work, optical and pharmaceutical management options are reviewed. This paper presents a current overview on the co… Show more

“…[8][9][10][11] Although several interventions have shown efficacy in slowing the progression of myopia in childrenincluding atropine, 12 dual-focus contact lenses 13 and orthokeratology 14 -they can be difficult to implement in very young children and may have adverse effects. [15][16][17] Numerous lines of evidence support a genetic contribution to myopia, including clustering of myopia cases within families and a higher correlation of myopia onset in monozygotic twins than in dizygotic twins. 16 Rare variants that can lead to the development of high myopia have been identified…”

“…These findings seem to be similar to those observed in healthy subjects. During childhood a lower percentage of hypermetropia and a higher percentage of myopia is observed due to intrinsic and extrinsic factors such as the fast progression and axial length elongation of eye as well as environment, particularly extensive near work (schooling, study, reading) that have been known to cause abnormal eye growth ( Kaiti et al, 2021 ). The high prevalence of refractive errors in CP highlights the importance of screening for these easily treatable disorders since the first years of life.…”

“…Myopia is a common problem in schoolchildren [1], and efficacious public health interventions are urgently warranted to prevent or delay the progression of myopia in schoolchildren. The most effective strategy for controlling myopia has yet to be identified [29]. Nonpharmacological or noninvasive ES interventions for treating myopia have been inconclusive.…”
