Review on Partial Discharge Diagnostic Techniques for High Voltage Equipment in Power Systems

Abstract: In modern power systems, condition based monitoring and diagnosis is essential to ensure the effective and reliable operation of different high voltage equipment (HVE). Compared to other monitoring techniques, partial discharges (PD) measurement is considered as a key method for assessing the insulation health condition. The benefits of PD condition monitoring of HVE can be extended by proper detection, identification, and interpretation of PD signal. Among both online and offline PD monitoring techniques, onl… Show more

“…Cables, transformers, and switchgear are examples of MV components where PD can damage the insulation materials. From gas-insulated to oil-insulated to solid-insulated equipment, PD can happen anywhere if there is an insulation defect or accelerated aging [13]. The most Energies 2024, 17, 1142 4 of 31 critical components of the power system are the power cables, which need to be extremely reliable to prevent revenue losses from early failure.…”

“…Numerous PD signal parameters (key parameters) that show details regarding the severity of the PD and the insulation state of MV equipment can be used to evaluate PD characteristics. PD inception voltage, cumulative energy function, accumulated apparent charge, average discharge current, discharge power, signal frequency, and quadratic rate are considered as the key parameters [13].…”

“…The measurement and detection of partial discharges (PDs) are invaluable tools for the evaluation of insulation quality, generating improvements in both maintenance practices and risk management in energy devices. A literature review on current online PD monitoring techniques used for different high-voltage electrical components in power electrical systems is presented in [ 1 ].…”
