Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR) powered by renewable electricity is a promising technology to mitigate carbon emissions and lessen the dependence on fossil fuels toward a carbon‐neutral energy cycle. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) and their derivatives, due to their excellent intrinsic activity, have emerged as promising materials for the ECR to high‐demand products. However, challenges such as unsatisfactory energy efficiency, selectivity, and relatively low production rates hinder their industrial scalability. Here, a comprehensive and critical review is presented that summarizes the state‐of‐the‐art progress in MOF‐based and MOF‐derived CO2 electroreduction catalysts from design and functionality perspectives. The fundamentals of CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) over heterogeneous catalysts, reaction mechanisms, and key challenges faced by ECR are described first to establish a solid foundation for forthcoming in‐depth analyses. MOF's building blocks, properties, and shortcomings pertinent to ECR including low conductivity and stability, are systematically discussed. Moreover, comprehensive discussions are provided on MOF‐based and MOF‐derived catalysts design, fabrication, characterization, and CO2RR activity to pinpoint the intricate structure‐property‐performance relationship. Finally, promising recommendations are put forward for enhancing MOF electrocatalysts activity, selectivity, and durability. This work may serve as a guideline for developing high‐performance MOF‐related catalysts for CO2RR, benefiting researchers working in this growing and potentially game‐changing area.

CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR), as a promising strategy for storing renewable energy and promoting carbon resource recycling, is critical for industrial development. Previous reports have extensively explored catalyst‐electrolyte microenvironmental modulation to elucidate coupling mechanisms and enhance catalytic conversion to multicarbon products. Currently, most reviews mainly focus on the impact of microenvironment modulation in low‐current systems on mechanism exploration and performance optimization, yet few of them can integrate macroscopic applications with microscopic investigations to explore the relevance between industrial development and catalyst‐electrolyte microenvironmental optimization. To address the gap, this review focuses on summarizing the challenges and advancements in microenvironment modulation for the development of high‐current devices. By introducing models of different scales sequentially, the connection between microenvironmental modulation and device performance is clarified. Then, various invalidation mechanisms and effective solutions are summarized to intuitively expound the impact of microenvironment modulation on high‐current stability. Meanwhile, as an intuitive measure of the rationality of microenvironment modulation, evaluation methods of device performance should be refined, which are also covered in further detail below. Finally, more valuable and challenging prospects are discussed for guiding the further industrial transformation of CO2RR.

Tuning the selectivity of CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) solely by changing electrolyte is a very attractive topic. In this study, we conducted CO2RR in different aqueous electrolytes over bulk metal electrodes. It was discovered that controlled CO2RR could be achieved by modulating cations in the electrochemical double layer. Specifically, ionic liquid cations in the electrolyte significantly inhibits the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), while yielding high Faraday efficiencies toward CO (FECO) or formate (FEformate) depending on the alkali metal cations. For example, the product could be switched from CO (FECO = 97.3%) to formate (FEformate = 93.5%) by changing the electrolyte from 0.1 M KBr‐0.5 M 1‐octyl‐3‐methylimidazolium bromide (OmimBr) to 0.1 M CsBr‐0.5M OmimBr aqueous solutions over pristine Cu foil electrode. In situ spectroscopy and theoretical calculations reveal that the ordered structure generated by the assembly of Omim+ under an applied negative potential alters the hydrogen bonding structure of the interfacial water, thereby inhibiting the HER. The difference in selectivity in the presence of different cations is attributed to the hydrogen bonding effect caused by Omim+, which alters the solvated structure of the alkali metal cations and thus affects the stabilization of intermediates of different pathways.
