Review on Synthesis of Colloidal Hollow Particles and Their Applications

Abstract: Hollow latex (HL) particles of polymers or hybrid polymer/inorganic materials have advantages in efficient encapsulation of active ingredients, ability to improve opacity or hiding power, and low density. Due to the flexible design for achieving the desired functionality, polymeric HL particles serve as stimuli-responsive capsules for drug delivery and cosmetics, white pigment for coatings, as well as nanoreactors for the confined reactions. Among numerous studies on the synthesis of HL particles for specific … Show more

“…In this strategy, NPs are formed in solution, which usually offers a great control on their shape and size, allowing in many cases a narrow size distribution [62]. Moreover, synthesis methods for the production of anisotropic particles [63] as well as complex structures such as hollow structures [64], core-shell particles [65], and particles showing regions with different surfaces, chemistries, and properties (for example Janus NPs [66]) can be designed. The major drawback of this strategy is the possibility of particle aggregation.…”

“…Other possible applications of HP are coatings (polymeric HP are considered as a white pigment, competitive to conventionally applied TiO 2 ), cosmetics (carboxymethyl cellulose-based HP are applied for encapsulation of active ingredients of various cosmetics) and electronics (mesoporous polymeric HP are considered as a filler in the electrolyte membranes for solid-state batteries). For the possible application of HP see the comprehensive review of Wichaita et al (2019) and references therein.…”

“…Polymer microcapsules or hollow microspheres have broad applications in electrochemical devices, catalysts, sensors and drug release due to their unique structural characteristics and physical and chemical properties. [1][2][3][4] In some fields, such as stimuliresponse materials, to reuse stimuli-response microcapsules, the structure of microcapsules should be maintained the initial state before and after response to external stimuli such as heat, electric field, pH, etc. [5][6][7] However, using single low-ceiling-temperature polymers as microcapsule shell is challenging because they cannot maintain shell wall stability under external extreme stimuli conditions.…”
