Review on the distribution of microplastics in the oceans and its impacts: Need for modeling-based approach to investigate the transport and risk of microplastic pollution

Abstract: Many studies have proven that microplastics are transported from the terrestrial ecosystem to the marine ecosystem. Furthermore, it has been established that a significant quantity is added to the marine ecosystem through river transport and atmospheric deposition. Though several methods exist to estimate the concentration of microplastics in the marine ecosystem, it is very difficult to precisely quantify the pollutants and determine the amount transported from the land to the ocean. The data on the extent of… Show more

“…MPs are recognized as hazardous pollutants primarily due to their widespread presence and persistence in various habitats. The absorption of chemicals onto the plastic surface, resulting in a complex mixture of pollutants available to marine species, is facilitated by the high surface area to volume ratio of small particles and their non-polar surface (Sheela et al, 2021). The toxicity of MPs varies primarily depending on their size, as smaller particles can penetrate organisms more deeply.…”

“…Electron Microscopy can all be used to identify micro plastic suspensions [35,36] Table 3 Toxicological effect of plastic on fish species Other types of decay happen more slowly than light-induced oxidation [55]. All biological materials, including plastics, harm the marine environment when they are hydrolyzed, and bottom sediments degrade plastics more slowly than lightinduced oxidative degradation does.…”

“…The distribution of MPs is observed from the poles to the equator [56]. Plastics enter the environment primarily as a result of human activity [57,58]. The important sources of plastic pollution are agricultural mulching [59], sewage sludge disposal [60], wastewater treatment plants [61], informal landfills [62], and biowaste compost [63].…”
