Tideland reclamation has drastic effects on coastal ecosystem involved in soil microorganisms. However, the knowledge regarding temporal variations of microbial community along reclamation chronosequence and their environmental variable predictor is still poorly known. Using Illumina sequencing, we qualified bacterial community composition in soils collected from one tideland and four reclamation stages, i.e. 2-year, 7-year, 19-year and 39-year in Jiangsu, Eastern China. Across all samples, the dominant groups were Proteobacteria, Bacteroidete, Acidobacteria, Planctomycetes and Chloroflexi. Reclamation activity and its histories greatly altered bacterial community structure, and only 0.28% of phylotypes were shared by five soils. Specially, some typical marine bacteria (Gaetulibacter, Alcanivorax …) disappeared in reclamation soils, while other groups (Niabella, Flavisolibacter…) were gradually eminent. Generally, bacterial diversity and richness increased with reclamation histories. Bacterial community was correlated with most of soil physico-chemical properties. Amongst, mean weight diameter of soil aggregates (MWD) was detected as a primary factor predicting bacterial community composition. Together, our results indicated that effects of reclamation on bacterial community varied with diked histories, and MWD was a major factor predicting bacterial community during progressive reclamation. These findings offer predicting case study for understanding the impact of reclamation and its histories on microbial community in a coastal ecosystem.

Controlling land use change in coastal areas is one of the world’s sustainable development goals and a great challenge. Existing research includes in-depth studies of land use change in relatively developed regions, but research on economically less developed but fast-growing regions is lacking. Since the reform and opening up in Vietnam, the influences of globalization have prompted the economy of the coastal area to develop rapidly, making it one of the less developed but rapidly developing regions where human activities and global changes vigorously interact. Therefore, taking the coastal area of Vietnam as the study area, we used the land use change index and random forest model to analyze the spatial variations of land use change and its impact factors. The research shows that: (1) land use shows a trend of continuous and rapid increase in construction land, with the proportion of construction land increasing from 2.72% in 2000 to 4.40% in 2020. However, natural landscapes, such as forests and grasslands, are decreasing. (2) Land use also shows obvious spatial variation characteristics, which are mainly manifested in the differences in change rate, development intensity, and distribution characteristics. Among them, the region with the largest rate of change was the Central Coastal Area. The region with the highest development intensity is the Mekong River Delta. (3) The main factors affecting land use change are foreign direct investment (FDI), the industrialization index, and population. Based on that, we analyzed the mechanism influencing the above factors from the perspectives of urbanization and population growth, and industrialization and park construction, as well as globalization and FDI, which can explain well the relationship between the impact factors and the spatial variation. This study can provide a valuable decision-making reference for formulating reasonable regional land development policies and is a good example of land use research for other rapidly developing areas.

Enhancing Uptake of Nature-Based Solutions for Informing Coastal Sustainable Development Policy and Planning: A Malaysia Case Study

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) have been advocated to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural or modified ecosystems, simultaneously providing human well-being and biodiversity benefits. The uptake of NbS differs regionally with some countries exhibiting greater uptake than others. The success of NbS also differs regionally with varying environmental conditions and social-ecological processes. In many regions, the body of knowledge, particularly around the efficacy of such efforts, remains fragmented. Having an “inventory” or “tool box” of regionally-trialed methods, outcomes and lessons learnt can improve the evidence base, inform adaptive management, and ultimately support the uptake of NbS. Using Malaysia as a case study, we provide a comprehensive overview of trialed and tested NbS efforts that used nature to address societal challenges in marine and coastal environments (here referring to mangroves, seagrass, coral reefs), and detailed these efforts according to their objectives, as well as their anticipated and actual outcomes. The NbS efforts were categorized according to the IUCN NbS approach typology and mapped to provide a spatial overview of IUCN NbS effort types. A total of 229 NbS efforts were collated, representing various levels of implementation success. From the assessment of these efforts, several key actions were identified as a way forward to enhance the uptake of Nature-based Solutions for informing coastal sustainable development policy and planning. These include increasing education, training, and knowledge sharing; rationalizing cooperation across jurisdictions, laws, and regulations; enhancing environmental monitoring; leveraging on existing policies; enabling collaboration and communication; and implementing sustainable finance instruments. These findings can be used to inform the improved application and uptake of NbS, globally.
