Review: Seaweed tissue culture as applied to biotechnology: Problems, achievements and prospects

Abstract: Advances have been made in cell and tissue culture of seaweeds to define a unique branch of in vitro techniques; however, they are lagging far behind those of land plants and have limited applications. Explants can be cultivated axenically in enriched or artificial seawater culture media, and regeneration and even callus formation are achieved. In this state of the art technique, seaweed tissue culture may be already useful for certain biotechnological applications, such as clonal propagation of seed material … Show more

“…Regeneration is a wide spread phenomenon in seaweeds which demonstrates totipotency of algal cells, provides a mean for studying morphogenetic stages of adventive embryony, and produces correlation growth effects which may be useful for hypothesizing mechanism of regulation of morphogenesis (Buggeln 1981;Baweja et al 2009). The development of in vitro vegetative propagation permits the rapid multiplication of desired varieties.…”

“…To overcome this problem, control over reproduction to introduce new cultivation techniques using gamete or spore seeding is a necessity in most large scale algae cultivation systems ). An increasing number of studies have dealt with algae tissue culture following the techniques used in higher plants (Gao et al 2005;Baweja et al 2009). Although there are many reports on callus induction, thallus regeneration and growth from a wide variety of economically important algae, far less is known about hormonal regulation of development, morphogenesis and regeneration.…”
