Reviewing the Role of Outdoor Lighting in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) aim at providing a healthier planet for present and future generations. At the most recent SDG summit held in 2019, Member States recognized that the achievements accomplished to date have been insufficient to achieve this mission. This paper presents a comprehensive literature review of 227 documents contextualizing outdoor lighting with SDGs, showing its potential to resolve some existing issues related to the SDG targets. From a list of 17 goals, six SDGs were identi… Show more

“…In urban lighting, the concept of sustainability concerns three aspects: ecological, economic, and social [16]. From the ecological sustainability point of view, decreasing the amount of light in urban environments reduces both energy consumption and the recognized, harmful effects of excess light to nature and people [3].…”

“…Of the UN's 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs), six of them (3: Good health and well-being, 7: Affordable and clean energy, 11: Sustainable cities and communities, 13: Climate action, 14: Life below water and 15: Life on land) have been identified as having relevant synergies with outdoor lighting [1]. This includes various aspects such as human health and well-being, safety, restoration, socialization, ecosystems, biodiversity, and energy efficiency.…”

“…Historically, the introduction of electric lighting profoundly changed the human way of life, allowing for a broad range of activities previously confined to daylight conditions [8]. Today, a growing body of research shows that benefits of outdoor electric lighting also come with conflicting goals for a sustainable development, including immense costs associated with energy use (SDG 7) and light pollution, negatively impacting ecological systems, wildlife (SDG 14 & 15), and human physical and psychological well-being (SDG 3) [1,[9][10][11]. Hence, electric lighting must carefully balance the needs of light and darkness with consideration for human and non-human welfare [12].…”
