Urolithiasis is a disease in which uroliths form in the urinary tract from individual predisposing factors of each species, and with aggravation, animals can have urethral obstruction and die. In this work, an integrative review of the medicinal plants most used for the treatment of urolithiasis in dogs was carried out. The objective of this work is to collaborate with the veterinary community to expand the use of herbal medicine to treat this pathology, mainly due to its relapsing nature. Its formation can occur in breeds with more evident urinary supersaturation, genetic predisposition, age, reduced daily water intake, metabolic problems, medications that alter urinary pH, inadequate nutrition and predisposition to alterations in the urinary tract. Drug and nutritional treatment is questionable, as there are types of differences in the composition of stones and the response to these can vary a lot and, in more serious cases, surgery is needed. At high rates of recurrence, the use of medicinal plants offers options aimed at the welfare of animals. Therefore, innovative research on their use of these plants informs how they can be consumed safely and with great pharmacological effect. With this, more tutors are looking for professionals who prescribe these plants in a preventive way, avoiding surgical emergencies and possible death of your animal. Urinary system herbal medicines control inflammation and increase diuresis, preventing crystal aggregation and possible growth, in addition to favoring their elimination through the urethra.

Costus scaber is an herbaceous species that has hard and cylindrical stems and can reach up to 80 cm in height. It has an inflorescence at the end of the stalk from 6 to 10 cm long, which is surrounded by scaly bracts. Due to this species interesting medicinal potential, the objective of this study was to analyze its cytotoxic and genotoxic effect. The cytogenotoxic and antiprofilerative effect was evaluated using the bioindicator Allium cepa via the direct and indirect method. Fresh Leaves of C. scaber were used for the infusion. Three different concentrations of infusions were elaborated, which were 2, 3 and 4 g/L -1 for each of the different methods, and were analyzed at 24, 48 and 72 hours. Five slides were made per treatment, with 300 cells per slide. Statistical analyses were performed in the R program. The cytotoxic, genotoxic and antiprofilerative effects were found in certain concentrations and at certain exposure periods, and it was also noted that, in general, as the concentration and exposure period increased, the mitotic index decreased and the antiprofilerative effect increased. Several chromosomal abnormalities were found in the infusions analyzed. Therefore, according to the results found, it can be concluded that C. scaber has great potential for genetic improvement of plants in the field of drug production mainly in the field of oncology.

Objetivo: o presente estudo realizou uma revisão integrativa visando avaliar os aspectos químicos de espécies pertencentes ao gênero Costus, bem como de estudos que avaliaram as atividades biológicas. Metodologia: Inicial levantamento bibliográfico em PUBMED e SCOPUS, utilizando strings “Costus AND medicine pharmacological”. Foram lidos títulos e resumos, sendo selecionados de acordo com critérios de elegibilidade. Na segunda etapa, realizou-se a leitura dos artigos na integras e excluídos os artigos que não estiveram de acordo com critérios de inclusão. Resultados: Foram incluídos 21 artigos, tendo relação com informações fitoquímicas e diferentes atividades biológicas. Espécies do gênero Costus demonstraram atividades promissoras para o tratamento da inflamação, dor, diabetes e nefrolitíase, tendo relação com algumas alegações de uso popular. Considerações finais: Em síntese, espécies pertencentes ao gênero Costus são promissoras em termos medicinais, sendo necessários outros ensaios que avaliem a segurança dos compostos presentem nas espécies do gênero para futuros ensaios clínicos.
