“…For environmental reasons, this source which is largely available in the North African countries continues to be increasingly privileged throughout the world. The arid Saharan climate is known to offer a good solar radiation during all the year (Bennamoun, ; Yaiche, Bouhanik, Bekkouche, Malek, & Benouaz, ). Among the interesting applications, we can consider the post‐harvest heat treatments of the date palm fruits largely produced in the south of Algeria (Yaiche et al, ).…”

“…The device (sunshine recorder) for measuring sunshine hours is simple (more details in Section 2), but useful information can be generated from the data and can be employed in many areas of research. This data has been used in several studies, including for air quality (Sanchez-Romero et al, 2016;Li et al, 2016); environmental pollution (Kaiser and Qian, 2002;Statheropoulos et al, 1998); energy (Yaiche et al, 2014); and solar radiation prediction modelling studies (Mulaudzi et al, 2015;Adeyemi et al, 2015;Singh et al, 2011). The sunshine hour of any day is affected by varying atmospheric and sky conditions, so SD can, therefore, indirectly indicate atmospheric turbidity, visibility and sky conditions.…”

“…Finally, a third set of data, including a larger number of stations from Tunisia and Algeria measuring only the monthly mean sunshine duration, was used to interpolate this parameter over the whole study area. Data for the Tunisian meteorological stations are public and are provided by the Tunisian National Institute of Meteorology, while data for the Algerian stations were produced by the Algerian National Meteorological Office and are available in the Algerian Solar Atlas produced by the Algerian Renewable Energy Development Center [42]. As shown in Table 2, all data used in this study cover a period longer than 10 years.…”
