Revision of chamois infection by lung nematodes under ecological conditions of national parks of Slovakia with respect to ongoing global climate changes

Abstract: SummaryThe aim of our study was to analyze helminth status and to evaluate ecological conditions for infections of chamois with lung nematodes in national parks of Slovakia during global warming. The autopsies and larvoscopic examination of faeces collected from localities inhabited by Tatra chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra tatrica) in Tatra National Park (TANAP) and Low Tatras National Park (NAPANT) revealed the presence of following protostrongylids: Muellerius capillaris, Neostrongylus linearis and the specific… Show more

“…The mean fitted values of LPG showed clear temporal fluctuations, with a winter/spring–autumn bimodal pattern and a peak during the rut, thus supporting previous results (Stefancíková et al, ). The difference in fecal larval counts between territorial and nonterritorial males was greatest in November, with higher values in the former than in the latter ( cf .…”

“…While the Alpine chamois populations have been subjected to several parasitological studies [4], parasites of the High Tatra endemics have generally been poorly studied. Partial research on chamois was carried out in the 1960s and 1980s [5], with the focus mainly on lungworms [6], but more recent data on parasite fauna of Tatra chamois is lacking.…”

“…To assess parasite burden, we focussed on lungworm larvae, because their seasonal cycle shows a peak during autumn (Stefancíková et al. ). To count larvae, following Thienpont et al.…”
