Revision of Nearctic Dasysyrphus Enderlein (Diptera: Syrphidae)

Abstract: Dasysyrphus Enderlein (Diptera: Syrphidae) has posed taxonomic challenges to researchers in the past, primarily due to their lack of interspecific diagnostic characters. In the present study, DNA data (mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase sub-unit I—COI) were combined with morphology to help delimit species. This led to two species being resurrected from syn-onymy (D. laticaudus and D. pacificus) and the discovery of one new species (D. occidualis sp. nov.). An additional new species was described based on morph… Show more

“…Many species have been described among syrphids using an integrated approach (e.g. Marcos-García et al, 2011;Radenković et al, 2011;Skevington and Thompson, 2012;Locke and Skevington, 2013;Vujić et al, 2013;Haarto and Ståhls, 2014). To find genetic differences between similar species, analyses of both mitochondrial (e.g.…”

“…This sequence is the most commonly used marker in animal barcoding, including studies of phylogeny in Syrphidae (Locke & Skevington, 2013). In this study, a 874 bp long fragment of COI was amplifi ed using universal primers C1-J-2183 alias "Jerry" (5'-CCA-CATTTATTTTGATTTTTTGG-3') and TL-2N-3014 alias "Pat" (5'-TCCAATGCACTAATCTGCCATATTA-3') from Simons et al (1994).…”
