Revision of Neosuarius, a subgenus of Chrysopodes (Neuroptera, Chrysopidae)

Abstract: Th e Neotropical green lacewing genus Chrysopodes includes two described subgenera: Chrysopodes and Neosuarius with 30 and 19 named species, respectively. Th is paper, which initiates a revision of the genus, focuses on Neosuarius. First, the paper re-defi nes the suite of traits that characterizes the subgenus; in doing so, it limits the taxon to a smaller, and more cohesive set of species than was included earlier. Th en, because most previous descriptions are brief and have no reference to the genitalia, it… Show more

“…Measurements were made with the aid of Image J 1.46 (NIH, public domain) (Tauber) and Motic Image Plus (version 2.0) (Sosa). All measurements were made as previously described (Tauber 2010); the numbers of specimens measured ranged from four (internal structures) to ten (external structures). We made frequent use of the Neuropterida website: http://lacewing.tamu.edu/index.html (Oswald 2006, 2007) and the images of Leucochrysa types in the MCZ On-line Type Database: http://insects.oeb.harvard.edu/MCZ/index.htm (all of which were captured for the MCZ by CAT, GSA and MJT in 2010).…”

“…It has a large number of synonyms (see Adams and Penny 1985), and originally it was placed in the subgenus Chrysopodes (Neosuarius) . Recently it was moved to Chrysopodes (Chrysopodes) on the basis of adult characteristics (Tauber 2010). …”

“…Subsequent researchers included ~30 additional species in the genus, recognized generically distinctive genitalic characteristics, and divided the group into two subgenera: Chrysopodes with sickle-shaped mandibles and Neosuarius with broadly-tipped mandibles (Adams and Penny 1985, Brooks and Barnard 1990; also see Banks 1945). Thereafter, other species of Chrysopodes ( Chrysopodes ) were described (Penny 1998, 2001, 2002, Freitas and Penny 2001, Tauber et al 2012), and the subgenus Chrysopodes ( Neosuarius) was revised (Tauber 2010). The subgenus Chrysopodes ( Chrysopodes ) is currently under revision (Tauber, C. A. in preparation).…”
