Revision of the Neotropical genus Carrerapyrgota Aczél (Diptera, Pyrgotidae) with the description of two new species

Abstract: The Neotropical genus Carrerapyrgota Aczél is restricted to the South America (Brazil and Argentina). The genus is composed of two previously described species, which are revised herein: C. miliaria Aczél and C. personata (Lutz & Lima). Two new Brazilian species are described: C. aczeli from São Paulo and C. bernardii from Bahia. Illustrations of the external morphology of adults and male and female terminalia are also included. An identification key to the species is presented, as well as a brief discussi… Show more

“…The Neotropical Pyrgotidae fauna consists of 59 species of 13 genera (Mello & Lamas, 2016). Specifically, the South American Pyrgotidae fauna includes 52 species of 11 genera (Steyskal, 1967;Bernardi, 1991;Mello et al, 2010). The South American countries where Pyrgotidae have been previously recorded are Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Paraguay (Steyskal, 1967;Mello & Lamas, 2016;Rodriguez et al, 2017).…”

“…The immature stages of Pyrgotinae are internal abdominal parasites of adult Scarabaeidae (Coleoptera), and the adults are nocturnal (Mello, 2017). The only known biological record for a South American pyrgotid was presented by Mello et al (2010) for the species Carreapyrgota bernardii Mello, Lamas & Rafael, 2010 flying in association with the scarab beetle Pelidnota sordida (Germar, 1824). The South American Teretrurinae are also likely to be nocturnal, given their often being collected in light traps as indicated on their specimens labels.…”

“…As larvas da família são endoparasitas abdominais de coleópteros pertencentes à família Scarabaeidae. Mello et al (2010) identifi caram Pelidnota sordida Germar (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) como a espécie hospedeira de Carrerapyrgota bernardii Mello, Lamas & Rafael, 2010. Esse foi o primeiro registro de uma espécie hospedeira para a família no Brasil.…”
