Revision of the World Species of Megaphragma Timberlake (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

Abstract: Megaphragma species are important models for basic organismal research, and many are potential biological control agents. We present the first extensive revision of species of the genus Megaphragma based on morphological and molecular data. Our revision includes all previously described species, 6 of which are synonymized, and 22 of which are described here as new. We also provide the first key to all species of the genus and reconstruct their phylogeny based on 28S and CO1 molecular markers. The following spe… Show more

“…Megaphragna priesneri Timberlake (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) was found parasitising the eggs of R. syriacus in Egypt and Israel (Polaszek et al., 2022 ). Thripobius hirticornis Ferrière and Thripoctenus javae Girault (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) parasitise the larvae of R. syriacus and can efficiently control the pest populations on Bucida buceras and Lagestroemia speciosa (Etienne et al., 2015 ).…”

“…Primer sequences for each genomic region are listed in Table 1. The thermocycling conditions for the 28S-D2-3 region followed Andreason et al (2019) and that of COI followed Fusu and Polaszek (2017) and Polaszek et al (2022). PCR amplicons were visualized on a 1.5% agarose gel in 1X TAE buffer stained with SYBR Safe DNA Gel Stain (Invitrogen, Carlsbad, CA, USA) and a TrackIT 1 Kb Plus DNA Ladder (Invitrogen, Waltham, MA, USA) to estimate product sizes.…”

“…In this case we can presume that the trade routes can be a way for the introduction of new species in the country, especially a species with specimens that are so reduced in size. There are other examples of introduced species of hymenopterans by human mediated transportation, frequently with the transportation of their hosts (Fusu 2017;Polaszek et al 2022;Rasplus et al 2010). Also, Popovici et al (2018) formulated some hypotheses concerning the modality of introducing microhymenopteran species to a wide geographical area based on examples from Platygastroidea.…”
