RevisitingLepidonellaYosii (Collembola: Paronellidae): character overview, checklist of world species and reassessment ofPseudoparonella doveriCarpenter

Abstract: Characters used in the taxonomy of the genus Lepidonella Yosii, 1960 (Collembola: Paronellidae) are listed and discussed. Several new ones are introduced. An overview of pseudopore patterns across Collembola is presented, with several new locations of these structures across Entomobryomorpha. Their interest at different taxonomic level is underlined. The genus Lepidonella is redefined. The American species L. marimuti Soto Adames & Bellini, 2015 is placed in incertae sedis among Lepidonella. Lepidonella specie… Show more

“…The connection between the species L. curvicollis and L. mariani might be derived from the presence of additional pseudopores on Abd. IV: in dorsolateral (L. curvicollis) and lateral position (L. mariani), which supports the suggestion by Deharveng et al [60], according to which the number and distribution of pseudopores may have high taxonomic importance.…”

“…The obtained K2P and p-distance values (Tables S2 and S3) were way above the mean intraspecific values reported by Zhang et al (2018) and for the species of the genus (0%-7.0% for K2P and 0%-6.5% for p-distance, respectively), confirming cryptic species status. Nevertheless, consideration should be given to the revision of rarely considered or overlooked characters for these species, including, e.g., the number, type, and distribution of S-chaetae [62], or the number and distribution of pseudopores [60].…”

“…Troglomorphic Collembola are increasingly reported from the tropics, but the degree of troglomorphy in the species described so far is less strong than in temperate regions. Species which exhibit significant morphological adaptation to cave life in Southeast Asia include a single Neanuridae ( Coecolobaplumleyi Deharveng, 1983), all others being Entomobryoidea of various genera: Coecobrya , Cyphoderopsis Carpenter, 1917, Lepidonella Yosii, 1960, Pseudosinella Schäffer, 1897, Sinella Brook, 1882, and Troglopedetes Absolon, 1907 (Deharveng 1987, Deharveng and Gers 1993, Deharveng and Bedos 2000, 2012, Jantarit et al 2013, 2016, Nilsai et al 2017, Deharveng et al 2018). All are narrow range species.…”
