Revisiting the energy-growth-environment nexus in the OECD countries: An application of the CS-ARDL approach

Abstract: Background This study revisits the energy-growth-environment nexus in the member countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) by examining the role of trade openness, financial development, and urbanization. The cross-sectional augmented distributed lag (CS-ARDL) approach is employed to address the presence of slope homoskedasticity and cross-sectional dependence in the data set. “…The majority of scholarly works in this domain focused on exploring the interplay between energy, economic growth, and environmental factors across various groups of countries (Khan et al, 2020;Vo et al, 2022a;Acuin et al, 2022;Mardani et al, 2019) and single countries (Duong & Tran, 2022;Adebayo et al, 2021;Raihan & Tuspekova, 2022a. In these papers, most scholars have used CO 2 to evaluate environmental degradation, and they test the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) for various countries.…”

“…In their studies for the OECD countries, Duc, Ho, Le, et al (2022) and Duc, Ho and Vo (2023) examined the energy-growth-environment nexus, focusing on trade openness, financial development, and urbanization. Their empirical findings indicate that trade openness, financial development, and urbanization play different roles in the energy-growth-environment nexus for the OECD countries and that urbanization plays a limited role in this nexus.…”

“…The error terms are ε i,t , µ i,t , and ω i,t . Scholars have hypothesised and examined interactive effects among variables using CS-ARDL (Mehmood 2022;Ullah et al 2023;Vo et al 2022). A positive relationship is expected between all the independent variables and dependent variables.…”
