Revisiting the particle‐size distribution of soils: comparison of different methods and sample pre‐treatments

Abstract: The choice of analytical method and sample pretreatment has significant consequences for the shape of particlesize distribution (PSD) frequency curves, and therefore for the evaluation of soil textural parameters. Here, the comparison of several granulometric methods based on different physical principles is presented: wet sieving (WS), based on gravity and the mechanical force of water, was combined with pipette (PP) sedimentation/settling velocity, Micromeritics SediGraph (MS) sedimentation/x-ray attenuation… Show more

“…3. The densities of particles of different sizes are commonly assumed to be a constant (2.65 Mg m -3 ), which is not true for soil and which has been reported to vary from 1.66 to 2.99 Mg m -3 (Vdović et al, 2010;Miller and Schaetzl, 2012;Wang et al, 2013a). 4.…”

“…Emiatt a mérési eredmények alakulása nagymér-tékben függ az előkészítési módszer megválasztásától: a minták dezaggregálására és diszpergálására alkalmazott kémiai előkezelések (aggregátumokat összetartó ragasztóanyagok roncsolása, diszpergálószerek használata) alkalmazásától, a mechanikai diszpergálás intenzitásának és idejének beállításától (ARRIAGA et al, 2006;BIEGANOWSKI et al, 2010;VDOVIĆ et al, 2010;SOCHAN et al, 2012;SERBAN et al, 2015). A kémiai előkezelések során (pl.…”

“…It involved coarse and fine sands, coarse and fine silts and clay. This is because, aggregate stability is the main property of erosion control, runoff (Barthes et al, 2000;Barthes and Roose, 2002) and plant growth (Gawlik et al, 1999;Vdovic et al, 2010) in semi-arid regions (Dunne et al, 1991).…”
