Revitalizing cultural heritage: Strategies for teaching Indonesian traditional music in elementary schools

This research explores the Mahzani ethnic music tradition, which holds significance among the Tombulu sub-ethnic group of the Minahasa region. As an expression of their cultural identity, Mahzani encapsulates the richness of Tombulu music, encompassing artistic diversity, spiritual values, and the philosophy of life cherished by the Tombulu people. The aim of this study is to analyze the distinctive musical elements that contribute to the unique atmosphere of the Mahzani tradition. This study uses an ethnomusicological approach. This approach collects and analyzes data, namely the melodies of traditional Mahzani music in the cultural context of the Tombulu people as the owners of the music. The ethnomusicological analysis is carried out by analyzing the physical and non-physical forms of Mahzani music to reveal its melodic richness and its aesthetic and philosophical meanings. This comprehensive approach ensures a thorough examination of the musical elements and their cultural implications within the context of the Mahzani tradition. In the end, the result of this research is that the combination of poetry and melody in a single unit of Mahzani's expression at the time has unveiled a unique and mystical atmosphere. At this level, the Tombulu people believe that music has vibrations that are connected to nature and the creator. Music is no longer just a medium for expressing itself, but it is the intention of the expression of human life in relation to their living environment.

The role of symbolism in moral education: a study of the ruwat murwakala ritual

This essay is the outcome of a study on the Ruwat Murwakala, a traditional cleaning event for humans of sukerta that also serves as a backdrop for Javanese culture and religion. Although it is a religious activity, the ceremony serves as a moral education for society by conveying several symbols of worth. The mantra, one of the key components of the murwakala ceremony, is the subject of this investigation. This study used semiotic analysis of Ferdinand de Saussure's model and qualitative research methods. According to de Saussure, this symbol or sign can be understood through the idea of the relationship between the signifier and the signified. Reading the four fundamental mantras is the most important part of the ritual in Ruwat Murwakala's tale since it serves as a means of overcoming Bathara Kala. The primary methods for gathering data for this study were interviews and literature reviews. Direct observation and audio-visual recordings of the observation item were also used to obtain data. After then, the triangulation method was used to examine all of the data. The findings indicated that the four primary mantras chanted by the dalang during the Ruwat Murwakala procedure have symbolic meanings that include moral instruction about the tenets of human behaviour. This study examines educational resources from local traditional literature sources to demonstrate the significance of the idea of culture-based moral education. The findings of this study aid in the creation of community-wide moral education resources using an artistic and cultural perspective.

This research delves into Ronggeng Gunung dance, a traditional folk art from West Java, Indonesia, which, despite its cultural significance, remains relatively unknown. The study focuses on the crucial task of introducing this dance form to the younger generation, leveraging their receptiveness and curiosity. The primary objective is achieved through an illustrated book, offering a visual journey into the cultural roots and historical context of Ronggeng Gunung. The research extends beyond documentation by integrating educational aspects, providing insights into dance attire and musical components, and a comparative analysis of the dance's evolution over time. To accomplish this, a qualitative descriptive method is employed, grounded in accurate facts. Diverse data collection methods include a Literature Study covering books, articles, and journals related to Ronggeng Gunung dance, Observation of the traditional art form through archival and documentary examination, and Interviews with original sources to obtain authentic information. Additionally, Questionnaires assess the younger generation's interest in traditional dance, their knowledge of Ronggeng Gunung, and their preferences for the illustrated book's style. The overarching aim is to cultivate awareness and facilitate the preservation of traditional Ronggeng Gunung dance. After meticulous data collection and analysis, the research advances through design, media, and visual concepts, culminating in the creation of the illustrated book. A beta test validates its impact on the younger generation, demonstrating that the incorporation of a popular illustration style effectively captivates the audience. This outcome underscores the success of the book in fostering a more engaging and comprehensible understanding of the Ronggeng Gunung dance narrative for the younger audience.
