The Social Internet of Things (S-IoT) is a new paradigm that evolved with a convergence of social networking concepts and internet of things concepts. This paradigm helps develop intelligent devices and services with higher utility. The new paradigm enriches the social interaction between human's objects, heterogenous social objects interaction, the discovery of service and scalability. In recent years, S-IoT has been researching a hot topic and has drawn the attention of researchers, resulting in research on trust management, privacy preservation, service provisioning and security mechanisms. However, S-IoT faces new research challenges like interoperability, trustworthiness, security threats, scalability, navigability, service discovery and composition. In line with the research trend, this article provides a systematic survey of fundamental concepts of S-IoT and IoT, distinguishable characteristics of S-IoT and IoT and research challenges in S-IoT. This survey thoroughly reviews secure communication mechanisms, privacy-preservation techniques and the trust-evaluation model in S-IoT. Furthermore, we accentuate the privacy-preservation mechanism proposed in the literature for seven years and explored research areas. The holistic survey gives an overview of trust-evaluation models with respect to the service provider's perspective. This article overviews secure communication protocols and architecture in the S-IoT context. Finally, various research gaps, applications of S-IoT and research directions help a researcher to carry out research work in S-IoT.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is an interconnected network of heterogeneous entities, such as sensors and embedded devices. During the current era, a new field of research has emerged, referred to as the social IoT, which mainly includes social networking features. The social IoT refers to devices that are capable of creating interactions with each other to independently achieve a common goal. Based on the structure, the support of numerous applications, and networking services, the social IoT is preferred over the traditional IoT. However, aspects like the roles of users and network navigability are major challenges that provoke users’ fears of data disclosure and privacy violations. Thus, it is important to provide reliable data analyses by using trust- and friendliness-based properties. This study was designed because of the limited availability of information in this area. It is a classified catalog of trust- and friendliness-based approaches in the social IoT with important highlights of important constraints, such as scalability, adaptability, and suitable network structures (for instance, human-to-human and human-to-object). In addition, typical concerns like communities of interest and social contacts are discussed in detail, with particular emphasis on friendliness- and trust-based properties, such as service composition, social similarity, and integrated cloud services.

Toward Social Internet of Things (SIoT): Enabling Technologies, Architectures and Applications

Social Internet of Things (SIoT) tries to overcome the challenges of Internet of Things (IoT) such as scalability, trust and discovery of resources, by inspiration from social computing. This survey aims to investigate the research done on SIoT from two perspectives including application domain and the integration to the new computing models. For this, a two-dimensional framework is proposed and the projects are investigated, accordingly. The first dimension considers and classifies available research from the application domain perspective and the second dimension performs the same from the integration to new computing models standpoint. The aim is to technically describe SIoT, to classify related research, to foster the dissemination of state-of-the-art, and to discuss open research directions in this field.
