RF-pilot aided modulation format identification for hitless coherent transceiver

Abstract: We propose a RF-pilot aided modulation format identification (MFI) technique to enable a hitless flexible coherent transceiver with fast format switching. For the MFI, modulation format information is encoded to the amplitude of the RF-pilot, which can be simultaneously used for the compensation of both laser phase noise and fiber nonlinearity. The proposed MFI technique is able to identify arbitrary modulation formats including multi-dimensional formats and hybrid QAM formats. The high accuracy of the propose… Show more

“…By allocating variable bandwidth and modulation formats to each user according to their demand, the next generation flexible and cognitive networks have the potential to significantly increase the total traffic [1]. With a view toward an intelligent network, flexible transceivers that can support the transmission and reception of variable modulation formats have gained a significant amount of research interest [2,3]. One important building block of a flexible receiver is the modulation format identification (MFI) module, which tracks the modulation format of the received signal and reconfigures the digital signal processing (DSP) circuit of the receiver accordingly.…”

“…One important building block of a flexible receiver is the modulation format identification (MFI) module, which tracks the modulation format of the received signal and reconfigures the digital signal processing (DSP) circuit of the receiver accordingly. As discussed in [3][4][5][6][7][8][9], this automatic recognition functionality removes the need for end-to-end handshaking between the transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx).…”

“…To guarantee high MFI accuracy, machine learning models should be retrained whenever the link is changed, which is resource consuming and not practical. The second type of MFI is data-aided (DA) scheme, which is realized with training symbols [7] or extra sub-carrier pilots [8]. It is more robust than the first type and is capable of tracking fast format switching.…”
